Blinds To Go – Get Custom Fit Blinds

The clerestories, the arches, the wall-to-wall windows with a view to the patio… These are the endearing features that win the hearts of prospective homebuyers.

However, finding attractive and functional coverings for these creative windows can be troublesome.

How do you treat a wall with three sizes and shapes of windows? How do you cover windows far beyond arm’s reach that need to be covered and uncovered depending on the time of day? And what of the sloping ceilings that make it difficult for treatments to look level?

"These are the challenges in a house," says Paul Smith, an Interior Decorator since 1979. "I stand back and keep looking at the bare window until I get a picture of a dressed window in my mind."

Here are a few typical problems Smith has addressed"

Clerestories. Mini-blinds with a motor driven opening device can be activated with an electronic switch low enough to reach. The solution is also a luxury for those who would like to let in the light before getting out of bed in the morning.

Sloping ceilings. Smith likes to use cornice boards that slope with the ceiling’s angle to make the difference disappear.

Arches. The arch can be accentuated with a covering that follows the curve. Smith says curved rods and very carefully made drapes are one of several solutions popular in this area. Another, shown at top right, uses a curved cornice, a sunburst covered in a sheer fabric, Pella windows with interior blinds and tieback drapes. The lush, layered look can give privacy or light and still accommodate the window seat.

Different heights and shapes of windows on the same wall. In one particular home, each window was framed with a cornice of a different size and shape so that the top of each was the same distance from the ceiling. The coordinated drapes were added.

Architectural difficulties. Soffits and fireplace hearths sometimes "intrude" on an appropriate window treatment. At the top and bottom, drapes can be shaped to fit the protruding part.

The curved glass block window on this page makes a spectacular focal point in the master bath. However, drapes on a curved rod were needed to keep out the afternoon heat.
